Local Nature Organizations

Mass Audubon is the largest nature-based conservation organization in New England. Founded in 1896 by two women who fought for the protection of birds, Mass Audubon carries on their legacy by focusing on the greatest challenges facing the environment today: the loss of biodiversity, inequitable access to nature, and climate change.

With the help of our 140,000 members and supporters, we protect wildlife, conserve and restore resilient land, advocate for impactful environmental policies, offer nationally recognized education programs for adults and children, and provide endless opportunities to experience the outdoors at our wildlife sanctuaries. Membership

Through their annual membership dues, Mass Audubon members provide vital support for our ongoing wildlife and habitat conservation work across Massachusetts. Members enjoy free admission to our wildlife sanctuaries, which provide people with much-needed places for recreation and relaxation, and are home to more than 150 endangered and threatened native species.

Members also enjoy many other benefits and privileges, including exclusive discounts on exciting programs and classes, savings on gift shop purchases, a quarterly member newsletter, and bi-monthly e-News.

Our Impact

Mass Audubon’s mission is to protect the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife. Through our guiding strategies of conservation, education, and advocacy, we are able to make meaningful impacts every year. Learn more >

We enjoy and care for more than 100 special places – roughly 27,000 acres – all around Massachusetts.

For more than a century, The Trustees has been on the ground in communities across Massachusetts, working to protect special places, providing loving care of our reservations, building creative new programs to engage people, and sharing our expertise with neighbors and partners across the state.

Land Conservation and Stewardship

The centerpiece of the Trustees mission is protecting places of ecological, scenic, and historic importance. We search far and wide to find Massachusetts’ most potentially endangered iconic landscapes and precious cultural relics, navigate the complex and long path to bring them under our protection, and allocate land stewardship resources and expertise to maintain their integrity long into the future

Advocacy

When lawmakers introduce public policy, we make sure land conservation and historic preservation are taken into account. We build relationships at all levels of government, offer guidance and input, and ensure that the crucial work in our sphere—environmental agencies, climate-mitigating restoration projects, and much more—have the resources to be effective.

PURPOSE

To secure the health and wellbeing of the environment and of future generations.

VISION

A world where government fully recognizes the challenges we face and moves swiftly and effectively to address them.

MISSION

We advocate for policy that meets the scale and urgency of our environmental challenges.

VALUES

We think systemically and plan for the future.

We are driven by the potential of our work to impact future generations. We see the connection between all things: people and planet, policy and social justice, environmental and economic health. We think critically about intersectionality and the complexities of cause and effect.

We are strategic and ambitious.

We are motivated by the enormity of the challenges we face and by Massachusetts’ potential to lead the world. We are science-based, data-driven, and results-oriented. We choose priorities based on their impact on the Commonwealth and their potential to be adapted and scaled.

We prioritize equity, inclusion, and environmental justice.

We recognize that bias, racism, classism, and privilege determine who has power. We use our influence to help remedy the harm caused by centuries of environmental racism and to build a more equitable future. We are dedicated to anti-racism and to reckoning with our own biases.

Partnerships are at the heart of how we work.

We believe that trust is the foundation for progress. Our strength is rooted in our relationships. We convene varied stakeholders to forge common ground. If we disagree, it is with respect. We listen carefully, consider divergent perspectives, and operate with integrity.

MassDEP’s mission is to protect and enhance the Commonwealth’s natural resources – air, water, and land – to provide for the health, safety, and welfare of all people, and to ensure a clean and safe environment for future generations. In carrying out this mission MassDEP commits to address and advance environmental justice and equity for all people of the Commonwealth, provide meaningful, inclusive opportunities for people to participate in agency decisions that affect their lives; and ensure a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve.

Mission

The Friends of Holliston Trails are connectors. Our trail connects people to different neighborhoods and even to other towns. Our organization helps to connect residents to each other.

We maintain a safe, multi-purpose trail, bring the community together by hosting family-friendly events on the trail, and support a healthful community with open space to honor fitness goals.

And yes, we fundraise. All fundraising is allocated directly toward safety improvements and amenities on the trail, as well as driving awareness of the trail through community engagement. With the trail now complete, our primary focus is to educate the community on how they can help create a trail system where everyone feels welcome and safe.

We collaborate with other groups in town by financially supporting some of the needs of the Holliston Trails Committee, and sharing our open space with other like-minded organizations for their fundraising activities.
